Since the release of Windows95 in the midnight of 1995, the registry settings to replace its default icons on the desktop, including the Explorer, with alternate ones have been widely known and used as a common technique. Lots of utilities have been uploaded for changing icons with ease by utilizing those features.

Although it remains a mystery why those settings were embedded in Windows, they were succeeded by WindowsNT4.0 and even survived the total replacement of icons at the introduction of IE4.0. They still work in Windows98.

Over several years, various icons for the replacement have been released. Especially, a group of icons which look like those of MacOS have won wide popularity so that tons of siblings were created. It is quite funny that although original icons designed for the Copeland by Apple have got forgotten, their essence has powerfully spread and ruled the world.
